Dietary Supplements vs. Pharmaceutical Medications

Every month the pharmaceutical companies produce another product to stock on the shelves of your local discount pharmacy. For everything that can go wrong with the human body, it is almost guaranteed that there is a medication you can take to cure it or at least relieve some of the symptoms. However, many of these medications produce unpleasant side effects that need to be handled by other medication that may produce another set of unpleasant side effects. Before you know it, you could end up taking 5-6 types of medications a day just to cure one disease.

To avoid this pharmaceutical merry go round, some people try to avoid taking medication in the first place and instead look for more natural remedies. Natural medicine has been around for centuries, so looking to Mother Nature for help with a diseased condition is nothing new. However, with all that modern science has taught us, are dietary supplements and natural remedies really that much better than the pharmaceutical medications found on discount pharmacy shelves? With many experts working to promote their own agenda, it is often difficult to get a clear answer. Some experts say that natural medicine helps the body heal itself while others claim herbal remedies are the equivalent of snake oil, completely useless.

But it is tough to ignore the fact that some dietary supplements are very effective at treating medical conditions. For example, it is widely accepted that St. John's wort, a plant found in subtropical regions throughout the world, can help alleviate mild depression. It is a low cost alternative to more popular pharmaceutical drugs and is generally well tolerated by the body. Since it is a popular herbal supplement, it can be found in most discount pharmacy stores and purchased without a prescription. Ginkgo Biloba, Echinacea, and Garlic are other herbs that have been known to improve health.

Equally, though, there are a number of pharmaceutical created medicines that are just as effective and are also well tolerated by the body. Penicillin is perhaps the most famous even though it was discovered accidentally. It is has been used to treat previously untreatable diseases such as syphilis and Staphylococcus infections. Deciding whether herbal remedies or pharmaceutical drugs are better for you really depends on what you believe and the level of risk you are willing to take. It is best to do as much research as you can on all of your treatment options and go with the one you are most comfortable with.
